Lyrics

(French folk song, Lyrics by Homer H. Harbour, publ. 1921)

When winter winds are blowing
And nights are long and cold,
The bells ring in the New Year,
The bells ring out the old.
Welcome Happy New Year,
Born in winter cold.

What will the New Year bring us,
Before he too is dead,
The New Year will be showers
And dew and roses red,
Peaches, plums and cherries,
Singing birds o’erhead.

The New Year will bring sunshine
The New Year will bring rain,
And orchards white with blossoms
And fields of golden grain.
Last of all his presents,
Christmas bells again.
