Lyrics

Refrain
Follow the drinking gourd,
Follow the drinking gourd,
For the old man is a-waiting for to carry you to freedom
If you follow the drinking gourd.

1. When the sun comes out and the first quail calls
Follow the drinking gourd.
For the old man is a-waiting for to carry you to freedom
If you follow the drinking gourd.

2. The river bank makes a mighty good road,
Dead trees will show you the way,
And the left foot, peg foot, traveling on,
Just you follow the drinking gourd.

3. The river ends between two hills,
Follow the drinking gourd.
There’s another river on the other side,
Follow the drinking gourd.

4. Where the great big river meets the little river,
Follow the drinking gourd.
For the old man is awaiting to carry you to freedom if you
Follow the drinking gourd.

This song is perfect example of why folk songs can be powerful. Singing this song and learning about why this song was sung can be like going back in time. I start my Spirituals/Melody unit with this song. I explain the story through reading a book or watching the Reading Rainbow DVD. These books are good.
