In ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, hoe (no okina) means “to paddle”. Many polynesian languages are similar because of the similar origins of the people. “A hoe i te vaʻa”, or “E hoe i ka waʻa”, means “paddle the canoe”. Maybe this helps a bit.
