The original available account, as recognized to date, appeared in England in 1784, with opening line “Cry baby bunting,” a label by which the poem is occasionally called. “Bye, baby bunting” is a nursery school poem. There are quite a few variants. The poem was remarkably and sarcastically illustrated by the famous British artist, Randolph Caldecott. The term bunting is a term of endearment that may also imply “plump.” (source)
