Lyrics
(Danish folk tune)
Oh, my billy goats,
Oh, my billy goats are eating bark off the tree. (repeat)
I think they must be mad*,
I think they must be mad. (repeat)
*Sometimes the word “mad” means “crazy”. Example: Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland.
Folk Dance
Formation: Students stand in two lines with partners facing each other. Couple 1 stands at one end of the rows (jead).
- Section A (“Oh my billy goats…”) – Couple 1 joins hands and lightly runs between the two lines until they reach the foot of the lines. They drop hands, and each one turns self in a circle. They rejoin hands again, and run back while all other couples step toward the head of the lines (to fill the spaces Couple 1 vacated).
- Section B (“I think they must be mad…) – Couple 1 stops between Couple 2 and reels: Couple 1 links right arms and makes a turn (with running steps). Then they link left arms and make a partial turn. Each of them links right arms with one of Couple 2, makes a turn, then links left arms and turns.
- Couple 1 runs down between the lines again, this time followed by Couple 2. Then, when they run back, Couple 2 stops between Couple 3, and Couple 1 stops between Couple 4. They repeat the same reel sequence as above.
- Then, Couples 1, 2, and 3 run down between the lines and back. They each stop between another couple and reel as before. They are followed by Couple 4 as they run down and up the center again.
- They perform the same reel, and then this time, they are followed by Couple 5. On coming back, Couple 1 drops in place at the bottom of the lines.
- Continue with four couples reeling, five couples running down, and the last couple takes their place at the bottom of the lines.
