Lyrics
(American folk song)
Baby dear, baby dear, don’t you cry.
Father will come to you by and by.
Mother is baking you cakes to eat.
Doesn’t this song sound like it is missing the last phrase? Add your own – or have the students brainstorm how to end this song. Consider ending the song on a word that rhymes with “eat.” Would you end in E Major or C# minor? Have fun with it!

The correct lyrics are:
Baby dear, baby dear, don’t you cry.
Father will come to you by and by.
Sister is baking you cakes to eat.
Mother will rock her baby to sleep.
Do you have the melody for the last line? The copy I saw only had the first 3 phrases.
