Lyrics
(Traditional chant)
Spoken: Three little muffins in the bakery shop
Whispered: You know the kind with the honey and the nuts on the top.
Spoken:
Along came a boy with a penny to pay,
Bought one muffin and ran away.
Spoken: And there were two little muffins in the bakery shop,
Whispered: You know the kind with the honey and the nuts on the top.
Spoken: Along came a boy with a penny to pay,
Bought one muffin and ran away.
Spoken: And there was one little muffin in the bakery shop,
Whispered: You know the kind with the honey and the nuts on the top.
Spoken: Along came a boy with a penny to pay,
Bought one muffin and ran away.
Spoken: And there were no little muffins in the bakery shop,
Whispered: You know the kind with the honey and the nuts on the top.
Spoken: Along came a boy with a penny to pay,
And he said:
Shouting / Calling Voice: “What?! No muffins?!”

I love this chant. My kindergarten students loved this song. The only downside was that they liked it so much, they wanted to do it every music class. I had to ween them off of it.
It was published in my textbook series, that’s how I first discovered it. Now, I’m at a new school and I don’t have that same series, so I’m glad you posted it, so I can remember it and use it again!
Okay i’m a seventh grader and my sister was listening to this for her school and then i’m like CMON LISTEN TO IT AGAIN. I then tracked the song down i love this
Do you know if this is a folk song or if someone wrote it (who)? It is such a cute chant!
Isn’t this a great chant? The kids always LOVE it! This was listed as “anonymous” in the book I got it from.
What’s the origin of this folk chant? I teach it a little bit differently with a swing to the rhythm than the way you have it written.
Greg,
It can be difficult to find the origin of a folk song or chant, since they have often been passed down – and people change them as over time. I’m sure your students love it with a swing rhythm!

I found this in Share the Music, K, years ago. 🙂
That’s probably where I learned it, too! 🙂
I learned it like this:
There are three little cookies in the bakery shop,
You know the kind with the honey and the nuts on the top.
Along came a boy with a penny to pay.
And he took that cookie and he ran away.
So there are two little cookies in the bakery shop,
You know the kind with the honey and the nuts on the top.
Along came a girl with a penny to pay.
And she took that cookie and she ran away.
So there is one little cookie in the bakery shop,
You know the kind with the honey and the nuts on the top.
Along came a boy with a penny to pay.
And he took that cookie and he ran away.
So then there are no little cookies in bakery shop,
You know the kind with the honey and the nuts on the top.
Along came a girl with a penny to pay.
And he said ”What! No cookies today!”
Sorry but I like my version better! ☺️
Thanks for sharing!
I learned it this way. Every way is cute, just thought I’d share.
There were 3 little doughnuts in the doughnut shop. You know the kind with the honey and nuts on top. ____ came in with a penny to pay, he/she took that doughnut and ran away.
There were 2 little doughnuts in the doughnut shop. You know the kind with the honey and nuts on top. ____ came in with a penny to pay, he/she took that doughnut and ran away.
There was 1 little doughnuts in the doughnut shop. You know the kind with the honey and nuts on top. ____ came in with a penny to pay, he/she took that doughnut and ran away.
There were 0 little doughnuts in the doughnut shop. You know the kind with the honey and nuts on top. ____ came in with a penny to pay, “WHAT? No doughnuts today!”
Cool! I’ve never heard that version before! Thanks for sharing!
