Lyrics

(Folk song)

You’ve got to get up, you’ve got to get up,
You’ve got to get up this morning.
You’ve got to get up, you’ve got to get up,
Get up with the bugler’s call.

The major told the captain,
The captain told the sergeant,
The sergeant told the bugler,
The bugler told them all:

You’ve got to get up, you’ve got to get up,
You’ve got to get up this morning.
You’ve got to get up, you’ve got to get up,
Get up with the bugler’s call.

  1. The lyrics I was taught are; I cant get em up I cant get em up I cant get em up in the morning, I cant get em up I cant get em up I cant get em up at all T corporals worse than privates the sergeants worse than corporals the lieutenants worse than sergeants and the captains worse of all.

  2. For four years when he was in port, the Old Master Chief just loved to kick my door open at 0600 on Saturday morning after I’d played in a high school football game the night before and yell, “Reveille! Reveille! All hands rise up and trice up. Play sailor at night, play sailor at day.” It wasn’t funny the first time. The Navy lifer thought it was some joke to equate being sore and tired after a game with being hungover after a night ashore. Is there any wonder I jumped ship in San Diego when I was 17 to join the civilians?
