Bump Up Tomato

Lyrics

(Folk song)

Bump up tomato,
I love the weather,
Bring back my heart to me.
And every minute, minute, minute
My heart goes criss cross, tomato sauce,
Criss cross my heart is lost.
Bump up tomato, bump up tomato,
Freeze!

Circle Game

Formation: Students stand in a circle with hands almost like holding hands, but with fists. One student in the middle is “It.”

  • Ms. 1 = Right fist bump on left fist of right-sided neighbor on the beat. (“It” bumps own hand.)
  • Ms. 2 = Wave one hand in the air
  • Ms. 3 = repeat ms. 1
  • Ms. 4 = Clap 3 times on “and every”
  • Ms. 5-6 = repeat ms. 1
  • Ms. 7 = Cross one hand over chest, then the other hand over chest
  • Ms. 8 = One hand out in “I don’t know” gesture with palm up, then the other hand.
  • Ms. 9 = repeat m. 7
  • Ms. 10 = Point to heart, then both hands out with palms down
  • Ms. 11-12 = repeat ms. 1
  • Ms. 13 = Students in the circle freeze in place. “It” walks around and tries to make someone laugh. The first person to laugh becomes the new “It.” (Optional: You could set a time limit.)

Hi Beth! Thanks for all you do for music teachers. This site is seriously so helpful. Aimee Pfitzner Curtis comments here (around 18:00) about the mystery of this song’s origin. See what you think. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9l3Me5j9EM
