Lyrics - Sango
(folk song from the Central African Republic)
Awe bebëe, Awe bebëe,
Mamâ ague na ngû
Tî tö ngû, fadë lo ‘ke gä
Mbä tî mo bebëe apîka mo
Sï mo tot sô, toto äpë o!
English Translation - It's over, baby
It’s over, baby!
Mom went to the river
To draw water from it,
It was a baby, a baby like you, who hit you*.
That’s why you’re crying. Don’t cry, my heart!
*This refers to a possible older child who is jealous of the baby and may hit it. This opens the door to talk about emotions.
