(Bohemian folk song, Lyrics by Richard Compton, publ. 1921)
1. Once long ago when the world lay asleep
Out on the plain shepherds watched o’er their sheep.
Lo, there an angel bright came upon them,
Glad tiding from on high bringing to them: Jesus is born!
2. Then all the skies were a-flame with great light,
Where shining hosts of God’s angels stood bright;
“Glory to God on high,” they were singing,
Joy unto all mankind they were bringing: Jesus is born!
