Lyrics - Norwegian (Bokmål)
(Melody by Edvard Grieg, 1843 – 1907, Norway, Lyrics by Johan Krohn, 1841 – 1925)
Du grønne, glitrende træ, god dag!
Velkommen, du som vi ser så gjerne,
med julelys og med norske flag
og høit i toppen den blanke stjerne!
Ja den må skinne,
for den skal minde
os om vor Gud!
Den første jul, i et fremmed land,
sin store stjerne Vorherre tændte,
den skulde vise vor jord, at han
den lille Jesus til verden sendte.
I stjerneglansen
gik engledansen
om Betlehem.
Om Jesusbarnet fortalte mor
så mangen aften vi sad her hjemme;
vi kan hans bud og hans milde ord,
vi ved, at aldrig vi dem må glemme.
NÃ¥r stjernen skinner,
om ham os minder
vort juletræ!
English Translation - Song for the Christmas tree
You green, glittering tree, good day!
Welcome, you whom we look forward to seeing,
with Christmas lights and Norwegian flags
and high at the top the shiny star!
Yes, it must shine,
because it must remind
us about our God!
The first Christmas, in a foreign land,
his great star Our Lord kindled,
it should show our earth that he
the little Jesus sent into the world.
In the starlight
went the angel dance
about Bethlehem.
Mother told about the baby Jesus
so many evenings we sat here at home;
we know his commandments and his gentle words,
we know that we must never forget them.
When the star shines,
if he reminds us
our Christmas tree!
