- Carnival is celebrated in many countries, but the biggest party, which is attended by millions of people, is in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
- It starts 40 days before Easter, so the exact date changes each year. It most often occurs in February or March. The party lasts for 6 days!
- Carnival was brought to Brazil in the 1700s by the Portuguese. It was originally called “Entrudo.”
- Carnival is celebrated by “Samba schools” performing in concerts and parades, and people party in the streets. Carnival includes lavish brightly-colored masks and costumes, music, and dancing.
- Samba is Brazil’s national music and dance style, which is based in African, native South American folk, and Portuguese music. It plays a very important part of Brazilian Carnival.
- Carnival is spelled “CARNAVAL” in Brazilian Portuguese.
