Quick Facts

  • Known as “The King of Ragtime”
  • Born in the United States in (most likely) 1867 in Texas
  • Started playing the piano as a child
  • Left home in his teens and started touring
  • Studied music at George R. Smith College in Missouri
  • Ragtime has a combination of syncopation and duple meter with a steady beat. It influenced early jazz.
  • In 1902, he composed Maple Leaf Rag, which became the top-selling ragtime song, selling more than a million copies
  • Composed The Entertainer in 1902
