Hatikvah

Lyrics – Transliteration

(Traditional Melody, 17th century, Lyrics by Naphtali Herz Imber, 1878)

Kol od balevav penimah,
Nefesh Yehudi homiyah.
Ulfa’atei mizrach kadimah,
Ayin l’Tziyon tzofiyah.

Od lo avdah tikvateinu,
Hatikvah bat shnot alpayim,
Lihyot am chofshi be’artzeinu,
Eretz Tziyon viyrushalayim.
Lihyot am chofshi be’artzeinu,
Eretz Tziyon viyrushalayim.

English Translation – The Hope

As long as deep within the heart
A Jewish soul stirs,
And forward, to the ends of the East
An eye looks out, towards Zion.

Our hope is not yet lost,
The hope of two thousand years,
To be a free people in our land
The land of Zion and Jerusalem.
To be a free people in our land
The land of Zion and Jerusalem. (source)

Hebrew –

עַיִן לְצִיּוֹן צוֹפִיָּה;

  1. I am an older American but I love all things Jewish! In fact, as the Bible commands, I pray for the peace of Jerusalem. So my spirit resonates with the beautiful, heart=rending national anthem Hatikvah. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the simple notes, with printed Hebrew words and English! I want to memorize this song in Hebrew so I can sing along with all the splendid renditions available on the internet!
