The Music Man

In 4th grade, I show the students The Music Man. (My favorite is the 1962 version.) First, we discuss musicals, what makes them different from a regular movie or play. Then, we learn the songs: Pick a Little Talk a Little (not in the public domain) / Goodnight Ladies. We compare and contrast the songs and then learn to sing them together as partner songs.

Other things we discuss: how the melody of Goodnight My Someone and Seventy Six Trombones is the same. We discuss the differences (rhythm, meter, tempo, etc.).

  1. Hi! My name is Cara and absolutely LOVE your blog! Thank you so much for all of your posts. I’m going through your archives and tagging everything!

I am a music teacher in Texas and I’d LOVE it if you would guest post a lesson on my blog if you’re interested.

Again, thank you for your posts! Have a wonderful weekend!

  2. Hi, Beth! Great post, great blog! Do you have other musicals that you show to each grade level from year to year? Thanks!

    1. Actually, I don’t. I show Do, Re, Mi (from The Sound of Music) to just about everyone when I’m teaching melody. I also show The Nutcracker to 1st, 2nd and 3rd around Christmas. But I love musicals, and if you can fit it in to your curriculum, I would think several would be appropriate to show. 🙂

Hi Beth! Just came across your blog on Pinterest. I am thrilled! I need more of these posts please (or more wonderful ideas like this). I’m homeschooling a 5th grader next year and would like to base my music curriculum on musicals.
