I’m just writing to say that I really like your site, and also to give some information on this song. It twas originally composed by Dr. Thomas Hastings (1784-1872) and published in 1835:7 in “Mother’s nursery songs” (https://archive.org/details/mothersnurseryso1835hast/page/n11/mode/2up). It may have gone into the folk tradition later with a slight change. Hastings also had two verses. The notated music was written for two trebles.
