Each lesson is 30 minutes long.
Lesson 1
- Hello Song & Hickety Pickety Bumblebee
- Show Celebrations Intro PowerPoint
- Discuss how music is often part of celebrations
- Ask students to name any celebrations / holidays / special occasions
- Five Little Pumpkins chant
- Each student gets a turn holding a pumpkin.
- Chant poem (talking voice) – I point to each student as we say each number
- Another student turn off light
- At end, 5 pumpkins go hide
- Dreidel Song – we practice singing to prepare for All-School Winter Sing-Along
- Hands behind back for verses (to prepare for drum playing next time)
- For refrain, clap pattern
Lesson 2
- Hello Song & Hickety Pickety Bumblebee
- Celebrations Intro PowerPoint again
- Celebrations – listen to sounds of each special occasion – see if they can guess which sound belongs to which picture
- Dreidel Song – add gathering drum
- Ask, “What holiday is this song celebrating?” (Hanukkah)
- Five Fat Turkeys – Ask, “What holiday is this song referring to?”
- Choose a few students each time – in bubbles, acting out different moods while all students sing expressively
- Sing softly – in case the cook is still looking for the turkeys (more loud/soft ideas)
- Sing loudly – as if the turkeys are bragging about having escaped the cook
- Sing slowly – as if the turkeys are tired because they didn’t sleep very well
- Choose a few students each time – in bubbles, acting out different moods while all students sing expressively
Lesson 3
- Hello Song & Hickety Pickety Bumblebee
- Review Celebrations PowerPoint with sound effects – students guess which picture is which sound
- Five Fat Turkeys
- Pick 5 students to walk in different ways:
- loud and proud
- soft and scared
- slow and tired
- Pick 5 students to walk in different ways:
- Dreidel Song + drum, students take turns

The Celebrations unit was born out of a Kindergarten Social Studies unit. It means holidays and special days. We try to name all of the holidays we can, and we mention how music is often a part of such special days.
