4th Grade Rhythm/Jazz Lessons 13 – 19

Each lesson is 30 minutes long.


Lesson 13

  • Welcome Song
  • Rhythm flashcards with partners – they take turns “quizzing” each other
  • Practice Rhythm Performance rhythms – Add unpitched percussion instruments. 4 groups of students, each play one part. Trade parts.
  • Read Jazz Fly (i.e. turn on the CD and turn the pages as you listen!)

Lesson 14

  • listen to a blues song – mention the words “blues”  and “jazz” – [suggested: Wrong Side of the Bed Blues (song mp3 – scroll down)    (more blues songs)
  • Rhythm flashcards again
  • Pass out Rhythm Performance student copy
    • Practice rhythms. Put papers in folders.
  • Read Jazz Fly again

Lesson 15

  • Sing same blues song – sing through once
  • Rhythm Performance sheets
    • pass out
    • practice all together, explain
    • get partners
    • practice
  • A Tisket A Tasket
    • I sing the folk song
    • Listen to the Ella Fitzgerald version several times.
    • Discuss differences between the folk song and the jazz version
  • Explain Jazz facts – where/how it started, mention blues, and typical instruments used

Lesson 16

  • A Tisket A Tasket – listen to Ella’s version again
  • Practice Rhythm Performance rhythms
  • Perform – in groups of 4-6 students.
  • Announce rhythm quiz next time
  • Review Jazz facts

Lesson 17

  • A Tisket A Tasket – listen to Ella’s version again – maybe show the book illustrations while they listen
  • Rhythm Quiz
  • Review Jazz facts
  • John Coltrane book – listen and look.

Lesson 18

  • Review Jazz facts
  • Jazz assessment
  • Finish John Coltrane book
  • If time, Jazz Fly 2
