Nutcracker-2nd grade

(Here’s the 1st grade lesson.)

I review the story with the 2nd graders by showing them a PowerPoint (photos are from the internet) and playing key pieces from the ballet. Then, I focus on four pieces, which the students have to recognize on their assessment.

  • Spanish Dance
  • Arabian Dance
  • Chinese Dance
  • Russian Dance

I play the four selections from The Nutcracker Suite, and the students compare and contrast them by listening and dancing and coloring while listening.

This is the Nutcracker coloring book that I got my assessment pictures from. I love the pictures in this book!

    Hi Beth,

I’m a new teacher. I will be teaching music k-12 in a French school. I was wondering when you taught this unit during the year. Also, what themes do you use throughout the year? I have many grades grouped together and any ideas you have would be insightful!
